HOLLYWOOD - Back in 1984, the first movie of the Back to the Future trilogy had been shooting for 5 weeks with Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly . Bob Zemeckis (director/writer) convinced Steven Spielberg (producer) to hit the reset button with Michael J. Fox in the lead role instead.
Zemeckis reflected, "Eric is a magnificent actor but his comedy sensibilities were very different than what I had written with Bob (Gale), and he and I were just never able to make that work".
Stoltz bowed out and the rest is history.
